Sacramento County deputies are investigating a violent incident that occurred on April 18 2026 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area at the moment officers were dissolving a large unauthorized gathering of a crowd of several hundred.
What Led to the Shooting
Sacramento County law enforcement were first called to the park around 6:30 in the evening after being notified of persons possibly in possession of concealed weapons. Following that, another report was received about a reported physical confrontation happening inside the park.
An overhead unit was sent to survey the area but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Regardless, it became clear that a crowd of several hundred had assembled at the park without any Sacramento park shooting 2026 permit or approval.
The Shooting Itself
Officers worked to disperse the crowd by positioning themselves around the crowd and using their vehicle PA systems instructing attendees to disperse at once. Roughly 15 minutes were provided for individuals to vacate.
As the crowd was being cleared that between 20 and 25 rounds cut through the air. The sudden gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies at once began searching for victims.
The Shooting Victims
Ultimately, four shooting victims were identified as having gunshot wounds. The victims — made up of one woman and three men all believed to be in their twenties — were rushed to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Medical teams stated that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one sustained moderate wounds, and one had injuries classified as minor. In a positive development, all four were expected to survive.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District also responded and aided in treating those with gunshot wounds on location.
Evidence at the Scene
The bulk of the shooting was determined to have occurred adjacent to Cottage Way next to the local Home Depot situated at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators located more spent casings on Cottage Way. Bullet damage were observed in the wrought iron fence bordering the Home Depot. These findings indicated that one of the gunmen had been aiming south from along Cottage Way targeting the Home Depot store. The store itself was put under lockdown for a period of time. CSI units alongside detectives stayed at the location late into the evening.
